It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who knows me that I bought the new Danny Michel album, Loving The Alien, the minute it came out. The entire album is Danny doing covers of David Bowie tune, and the short review is that they are all great–and very different from the Bowie versions.
When I started seeing Danny’s live shows waaay back in the day, quite a few of the tunes he played were covers, and to this day when I hear the originals I find they suffer by comparison to the covers in my mind. So there’s nothing too strange about hearing Danny do great covers.
And Danny is a complete Bowie freak, of course. He has what has to be the largest collection of Bowie recordings in North America, for example.
The covers are of some of the more obscure Bowie material with “Young Americans” and “Ashes To Ashes” being the ones people are most likely to recognize unless they are Bowie fans. Me, I’m thrilled to see “God Knows I’m Good” on there, and the timing for a cover of “Big Brother” couldn’t be better in light of the U.S. elections.
I may write more later about the individual trackes, but after a couple of listens I am really enjoying this and recommending it to everyone.
