In a little bit of synchronicity, the random Russell quote that popped up just now in the sidebar was this one:
“It is possible that mankind is on the threshold of a golden age; but, if so, it will be necessary first to slay the dragon that guards the door, and this dragon is religion.” –Bertrand Russell
That’s topical because I just spent a significant amount of my Christmas evening watching The God Delusion and The Virus of Faith, the two parts of the Channel 4 documentary The Root Of All Evil?, in which Richard Dawkins stridently argues that the world would be a better place without religion.
Since they’re up on Google Video, watching them is as easy as clicking the links above and spending 45 minutes on each one.
I’m willing to forgive Dawkins his occasional over-the-top stuff, and straw man arguments, since I mostly agree with him, but the devout or anyone expecting a respectful argument will probably be enraged
