You have seen Black Books, right? That’s a pretty hilarious show–I think it recently overtook Chef! in my mental ranking of funniest British shows.
The thing I always find myself thinking when I see Moran perform is that the character he plays–who may or may not be himself to some extent–is That Guy. You know the one–every guy has at least one friend like this: the one who constantly gets you into trouble, who isn’t dependable or reliable, who can’t even be counted on to live up to the most basic parts of the contract of civilization… but you still hang out with him anyway because he’s just so damn likeable and fun to be around. And, to some degree, because he’s like a puppy–he pees on your floor, but he doesn’t do it maliciously.
Of course Moran mixes in some surreal stream-of-consciousness with That Guy, which makes the whole thing funnier.
I wonder where those guys go in the long run–because while every guy has one of them, as the guys get older, or settle into family life, they have less time for That Guy. Maybe there’s a club somewhere that they hang out at until someone’s marriage falls apart and the That Guy lifestyle starts seeming like a good idea.
Anyway, here’s some Moran.
Let’s start with one for Justine–Moran on Australia:
And one more for fun. (There’s some cussin’ in there.)
