And this will bring to a close (at least for now), the series of posts that try to capture the various pieces of art I have hanging around the house. It’s hard to believe that the first of these was posted around 18 months ago. Remember that these posts are made up of quick snapshots–these are hardly professional images, and the upstairs images are worse than the downstairs ones since the angles I could use to take the snapshots are much more highly constrained. As we’ve covered the entire house now, this post is dedicated to capturing things I’ve added since this series began, and showing a couple of the things that I haven’t yet figured out where or how to hang.
For example, since I started writing this, I’ve rotated out some of the Gaiman things. Where the Writer’s Prayer used to hang in the upstairs hallway, you will now find a print of Kaja Foglio‘s ‘The Jade Pearl‘. While it’s beautiful on its own, it has even more meaning for me as it was used as the cover for an omnibus of Barry Hughart‘s wonderful Master Li & Number Ten Ox stories. I had that framed at a new place downtown, as a test run. They did a pretty good job, but the store manager was such an annoying woman that I suspect I won’t be back there.
Where “Instructions” used to hang, you will now find yet another Jeff Jones print, this time “The Black Knight”:
Where the Dangerous Alphabet used to hang, you will now find this Margot Metcalfe print. This is another image of Iona Abbey, albeit a much smaller one than the one in the dining room.
The posts in the rec room that feature our Rigg & Kelly photos, now also bear a small Lisa Snellings-Clark piece, entitled “Luck’s Dancer” (in these colours, I think the full title is actually “Luck’s Dancer – Twilight”).
And now on to the unhung pieces.
This is one of my most recent acquisitions. It’s a Barry Windsor-Smith print, actually a cropped section from the promotional poster for his huge art book Opus
Another unhung piece is a different BWS print, The Book of Samothrace, which I also had plaque-mounted. This one had round corners, and the plaque dudes were able to do the same thing with the plaque, which was cool.
I don’t think this will ever end up on a wall–I really had it done just to protect it from accidental destruction.
This beautiful piece of original Paul Gulacy art is technically hanging, but I’m going to list it amongst the unhung because it’s been exiled to a closet. Sensible people who want to complain about this unjust exile should direct complaints to my wife.
This is another of my most recent acquisitions: a print of the Tom Canty‘s “Nightingale”. This piece was, of course, the cover for the Kara Dalkey novel of the same name. It was framed for me by comedian & comic artist Mike Holmes.
There is a perfect place for this piece in the family room, where a quilt is currently hanging. I think I will try to finesse Trish by moving the quilt to a more prominent place, to open up that slot for this Canty piece.
These two Mark Wilkinson images, jointly entitled “The Hill” are the cover and center-spread of Fish‘s first solo album “A Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors”. Both prints are limited, and signed by Wilkinson and Fish. Right now they are leaning in a corner behind the bar.
This piece is an original Michael Zulli oil painting, entitled The River, done on a piece of mortarboard. It’s an immature piece compared to what Zulli does now, but I got it for a steal. I don’t know what I’m going to do with this.
And finally, another original Michael Zulli piece, this one a gigantic painting on traditional stretched canvas. The piece is entitled “Na Tire Finne”, which translates roughly to “We Save Ourselves”. I bought this directly from Michael.
As you can see, it’s huge. I put that bottle of scotch in the frame to provide some sense of scale, and you can also see the shelving behind it.
I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this one either. Framing something that size will be expensive, but it seems to the thing to do. The other problem is where to put it. I’m not sure I have a wall big enough to carry this piece that’s open. I might have to build an addition. And then there’s the problem of how to convince Trish that the eyes aren’t all that scary…
