Baby Blog Week: The fastest year ever

Sarah Kathleen McLaren is one year old today. Damn. That was the fastest year ever. It’s definitely one of those “seems like it was just 10 minutes ago, but also seems like it was so long ago I don’t remember life before that” situations. For the record, at age 1, she is awesome. I bought her a couple of presents,… Read more →

How I Spent My Friday Night

So, we had another poker tournament at “the Drake” this Friday. I was quite excited since this would be the premiere of my custom Cthulhu chips, which had just arrived on Thursday. Here’s a shot of my new chips (which, like all the images in this post, is a link to a larger image): <Insert your own “gambling with your… Read more →

Apparently I am a road-trip amateur…

I have always thought of myself as something of a road trip professional (“I’m a mission specialist: I specialize in missions”) but apparently I was wrong about this. How could anyone take themselves seriously as a road tripper without owning one of these? 12-Volt Portable Oven and Pizza Maker # Plugs Directly into Your Cigarette Lighter Socket # High/Low Settings… Read more →

Cool Things That Come In The Mail

Lots of cool things have shown up here in the mail over the last month. Here’s one: My DNA cube, from Bathsheba Grossman. It’s on a light pedastel that cycles through a series of colours, making it look even cooler. I have it on display in the rec room–that image in a photo of the cube in situ in the… Read more →

One other time sink

In addition to all my legitimate excuses below for being too busy to blog, I also have a weekly poker game on Tuesday. It’s no big deal, just a lot of dealer’s choice: mostly hold ’em and seven card stud, with the occasional high-low variant when we have a full table. The game is pretty regularly at Mike Drake’s place… Read more →

I suspected it all along

My friend Soon-To-Be-Married-George (formerly known as “Undead George”, “MacJones”, “Jorge”, “35-year old burnt-out trucker”, etc.) sent me a link today to a Virginia Commonwealth University study on the relationship between brain size and intelligence. Here’s a bit of quote from the press release: “For all age and sex groups, it is now very clear that brain volume and intelligence are… Read more →

A Halifax History Lesson

One of the many things I love about Halifax is that it wears its history on its sleeve, as ’twere. You can’t help but notice it–the centre of downtown is a giant stone fort built into the hill the looks over the city. And that’s not even getting into the city’s long history of brewing (not to mention underground beer… Read more →

Picking On Gwenda

You may recall that once before I had a few minutes of boredom and picked on a friend by putting his face through a series of transformations using the St. Andrews Face Morpher. Well, yesterday I had a few minutes of boredom again, and this time I decided to pick on Gwenda. I was debating picking on my wife or… Read more →

My Scintillating Friends

I get to post pointers to my friends’ stuff all the time, because I am gifted with a bunch of very talented friends. Today’s subject is my compadre Alex Wilson, who is getting more and more recognition for his photographic work. Alex’s photo site has been on my link list as long as I’ve been running this blog, and if… Read more →

Pageantry

Last night, while all the cool kids were wrapping up Wiscon, I was working on some code and I was also exposed to the Miss Universe 2005 pageant. (Blame Trish–she put it on). You may have heard that Miss Canada won the pageant. I suppose I’m supposed to feel something nationalistic and patriotic about this, but I don’t. Lots of… Read more →

Statistically unlikely baby

So, it appears that Sarah is pretty unlikely, from a statistical point of view. Oh, not her conception–the McLarens are notoriously fertile (“… so fertile that sometimes the neighbours get pregnant.” Ba-Dum-Tsh)–but her height. We measured her this weekend, and got a height of 30 inches. This measurement was, if anything, erroneous on the conservative side. However, when we went… Read more →

Gone Missing

So I took last week off work (and off blogging) to deal with getting Sarah into day care. It’s a slow process, where she spent one hour the first day, two hours the second day, etc, to get acclimated (acclimatized?). The rest of the day was Daddy-Daughter time. This should have been terribly fun, and left me with lots of… Read more →
