Way To Go America, Part 2

While I’m at it, here’s a little something Will clued me in to. There are other human rights that the UN is trying to craft declarations of, as part of its continuing efforts to establish some baselines for civilized national behaviours. These are two quotes from what are essentially meeting minutes from a committee meeting wherein 8 such new resolutions… Read more →

Truth Is Out Of Style

Many disparate things have come together to activate deeply stored things in my brain. First there was a PvP strip that actually made me laugh. My immediate reaction was to adopt the name “Muppet Jesus” for my career as a hiphop artist. Secondly there is the constant reinforcement from the world of politics that there is no use for objective… Read more →

Aside

Wow, I hope this is accurate. I’m totally willing to trade for the chaos to get out from under.

Also officially on The List: The Salvation Army. (Note to self–remember this for the next time someone starts off on “faith-based initiatives” and public funding.)

Yes, I Am Enjoying This

A couple of times on the weekend I contemplated writing something about the proposed coalition. I’m kind of glad I didn’t, since things have moved at a much more rapid pace than I would have guessed possible. And besides, as usual, Patrick sums it up better than I could have. (As a bonus, the bit about Americans laughing derisively at… Read more →

And so it begins

So, on the one hand we have Harper making speeches about how this isn’t the time for Conservatives to be ideological, and how they need to govern “for all the people”… Conservatives must put ideology aside as they prepare to weather looming economic challenges facing the country, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday. … Harper told Conservatives they must be… Read more →

Campbell, Not Eddie

Very regularly since the American presidential race was set, and with more and more frequency over the last month, I’ve found myself astonished by how McCain seems ready to throw away every vestige of honour in what seems to be a “do anything to win” campaign of sleaze. It makes me think of Campbell. And the more I see pieces… Read more →

Explainers In The Mainstream.

Hey, remember back in June when I wrote a bit about how much I was digging The Explainers? Well, it appears the mainstream media has caught up with me…he said arrogantly.. The Sunday Book Review in the New York Times reviewed the book this weekend. It was the cover review. Here’s an excerpt: Of course, representing any Feiffer strip with… Read more →

More post-election blathering

So, low voter turnout has got people talking electoral reform again. Sadly this discussion seems to always focus on proportional representation. I say sadly because while I like the idea of every vote counting, I hate the idea of the parties deciding who sits in Parliament, not the voters. I haven’t yet seen a proposal for a system that lets… Read more →

Oh, Canada

I am so disappointed in you. Especially you Ontario, and you B.C. I had steeled myself for 134 seats, but this… this is horrible. OK, it’s not quite as bad as a majority, but this is still terrible. And if this voter turnout thing is true–that the right-winger got out a lot more of their voters than the other people–well,… Read more →

Double Debate Night

So I chose to watch the Canadian federal debate live, and to record the Biden/Palin show for later. The Canadian debates were interesting, but didn’t really do anything to change my basic opinions. Actually, that’s not true–my respect for Duceppe went up another notch, but it doesn’t matter as long as he’s the head of a separatist party. And, if… Read more →

Raging Out: DVD designed to create xenophobia works

So, the Clarion fund, which exists to “educate the public about the threat of Islamic terrorism” has massively distributing their DVD, which sure seems designed to make Americans afraid of brown people. Interesting, the fund seems to have done this massive distribution in the swing states only. I wonder what objective they could hope to achieve by fanning the flames… Read more →
