It begins…

Look, I know the dude isn’t the messiah. He’s a politician, and he’s way, way to the right of me, so I’m sure lots of things he will do will seem disappointing to me. That’s not the point today. As a very smart friend of mine said today: “For the first time in about fifteen years I believe it is… Read more →

Closing tabs from last year

You know the drill. I’m skipping the stuff that deals with Bush, Harper, or books, which should get their own posts. I had a weird fascination with Cass Elliot for a while there, primarily as a reaction to how much I was digging her tune California Earthquake. There were some weird side effects of this, from the relatively obvious, like… Read more →

Aside

I’m glad I stayed up to hear Obama’s speech. I do have one unresolved question for California at this point: what the hell is up with Proposition H8? California? Hello? You’re letting me down over there.

Aside

I believe I just heard around 52% of Americans and THE ENTIRE REST OF THE WORLD breath a huge sigh of relief.

President Obama

I am now drinking Macallan as old as I am, and raising a toast to President Obama. Damn it feels nice to say that. In a few minutes I will begin entertaining myself by imagining the Red State heads exploding if Obama came out to make his acceptance speech to the strains of Power To The People, or something similar.… Read more →

Campbell, Not Eddie

Very regularly since the American presidential race was set, and with more and more frequency over the last month, I’ve found myself astonished by how McCain seems ready to throw away every vestige of honour in what seems to be a “do anything to win” campaign of sleaze. It makes me think of Campbell. And the more I see pieces… Read more →

Double Debate Night

So I chose to watch the Canadian federal debate live, and to record the Biden/Palin show for later. The Canadian debates were interesting, but didn’t really do anything to change my basic opinions. Actually, that’s not true–my respect for Duceppe went up another notch, but it doesn’t matter as long as he’s the head of a separatist party. And, if… Read more →

Raging Out: DVD designed to create xenophobia works

So, the Clarion fund, which exists to “educate the public about the threat of Islamic terrorism” has massively distributing their DVD, which sure seems designed to make Americans afraid of brown people. Interesting, the fund seems to have done this massive distribution in the swing states only. I wonder what objective they could hope to achieve by fanning the flames… Read more →

Aside

So, I didn’t get the complete and utter McCain meltdown or doddering that I was hoping for, but if the numbers at MediaCurves are right Obama grabbed the biggest slice of the undecideds on every issue. That makes me feel better.

The Harlequin Is Out

Today, as my grandfather would say, the sadness is upon me. Let’s just say that my growing fear that McCain’s Big Lie tactics will work, combined with my stark and utter terror at the nearly inescapable certainty of a Harper majority, have made me miserable today. I’ve lost faith in my fellow man. Maybe I’ll be chipper tomorrow. Read more →

A Linkpost Before Sleeping

I think I’m going to soon look at setting up the site with “asides”, so that instead of gathering up large buckets of links that I have only a few comments on, I can just drop them in as “asides” between my longer and more content-y posts. In the meantime, another (possibly final) agglomeration of miscellaneous links. This might be… Read more →

I’ve been waiting to hear exactly that

“Our mission is to restore America’s influence and position in the world. We must use all the weapons in our arsenal, above all, our values. President Obama and Vice President Biden will shut down Guantanamo, respect the Constitution, and make clear once and for all, the United States of America does not torture, not now, not ever.” —Senator John Kerry,… Read more →

Context

Have I spoken of the Lapham’s Quarterly blog? It’s a fine, fine thing–they take current topical news stories, and link them to something contextual from history to provide a different view, or highlight a particular nuance, etc. A recent piece, contrasts some US election pandering with… well, that would be telling, but anyway you should check it out. The editors… Read more →
