Earlier this month I took advantage of the “50% of custom framing” offer at Michael’s to get a frame put on the large Michael Zulli oil painting, “Na Tire Finne”, that I mentioned previously.
I picked it up today, and I think it looks great in the frame:
Apparently the frame the canvas is stretched on (as opposed to the decorative frame I just bought) had warped slightly so that it was significantly narrower at the vertical midpoint than it was at either the top or bottom. I.e. the overall shape had gone from rectangular to ever-so-slightly hourglass. I’m told that they had to do a lot of work during the framing to correct this and firmly mount the stretching frame to the decorative one.
I still don’t have a plan for where I’m going to put it, though. Maybe it really is time to build that library annex…
On a related note: custom framing is clearly a giant scam. I kind of knew this already from friends (and wives thereof) who have worked in custom framing shops and revealed details about the markups, etc. However, it’s pretty clear that if you can offer a 50% discount and still make money, that the “normal” price is pretty outrageously inflated.
